Worried about inbreeding?

For eight consecutive years Reality-Red has been the #1 EFI Sire in the Holstein breed.

That is 23 consecutive sire summaries for Hurtgen-Vue Reality-Red as the top Holstein outcross sire. The Holstein Association USA compiles the list of bulls based on Expected Future Inbreeding (EFI) to recognize bulls that have outcross genetics, yet are still breed leading sires. To be included on the list, they must be from Section 2 (Top 400 TPI bulls) of the Holstein’s Red Book and have at least 75 percent reliability for type.

Is EFI a concern in your breeding program? Reality-Red tops the list at 4.3 percent expected future inbreeding. The next sire is a distant 4.9 percent. In a dairy genetics world that has focused narrowly on a few bloodlines, the breed is in need of outcross genetics.

Reality-Red is from an Excellent-93 3E Hanoverhill Renaissance daughter that was a Dam of Merit. His dam, Vanessa-Red calved consistently and in her 6th lactation at 7y11m made her highest record of 37,230 1394F 1179P. She has been twice nominated “Red Impact Cow of the Year” by Holstein International magazine.

This outcross leader has a TPI of +2007. He currently ranks as the #4 Red TPI Sire, #5 Red Net Merit Sire, and the #9 Holstein Feet & Leg Sire. But, what is equally impressive is that he ranks in the Top 100 Holstein bulls for TPI over 97 percent reliability. This “second crop success” list shows the staying power of his genetics from thousands of daughters across North America.

Dairy producers of all sizes and styles can appreciate long-lasting, profitable cows. Over 3,300 Reality-Red daughters average over 25,000 pounds of milk 4.0%F 1023F 3.1% 789P. These off-the-chart components (+.25%F +.06%P), incredible feet and legs (especially foot angle), positive daughter pregnancy rate, calving ease, and longevity, as seen in his increasing Productive Life data, make him attractive in many fronts. And at 99 percent reliability, it’s data you can be confident in.

Reality-Red was bred and owned by Richard Hurtgen, Hurtgen-Vue Dairy, Monroe, Oregon. Semen is available from independent distributors. For more information contact HVRealityRed@gmail.com or call 541-424-3391.
